Research Activities: | Retinal degenerations affecting the photoreceptor such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa represent the main cause of blindness in the population and to date there are no effective therapies for their treatment. The loss of visual function has 3 related and known causes: the irreversible loss of photoreceptors for which there is no cure; the malfunction of the surviving photoreceptors and the subsequent death and reorganization of the internal retinal circuits. My research is mainly focused on the study of the evolution of all these retinal neurodegenerative processes through different animal models. The well understanding of these processes is a key aspect to study and evaluate possible therapeutic approaches aimed at preventing the death of the photoreceptor, the second main objective of my research. |
